It originated in Calabria, at the Vecchio Magazzino Doganale di Giocondo, where Captain Jefferson found shelter from a shipwreck in 1871. To repay their hospitality, he created what he first called an "important amaro." It is still produced today using an authentic, rural method, selecting and hand-picking the botanicals and citrus fruits, including Rocca Imperiale PGI lemons, sweet and bitter Bisignano oranges from the family garden, Pellaro bergamots, Palombara oregano, and Bisignano rosemary, all processed separately in a hydroalcoholic infusion, respecting the raw materials and seasonality. It was not for nothing that it was recognized as the best liqueur in the world at the 2018 World Liqueur Awards.
