Founded in 1815 on the south coast of the island of Islay, Ardbeg is a cornerstone of Scottish peated whisky production, which experienced a definitive revival in the 1990s when it was acquired by Glenmorangie plc. The malt used is peated to very high levels (approximately 50-55 ppm phenols), using local Islay peat, rich in marine and vegetal elements that give the whisky its distinctive aromatic profile. The distillery still uses an Oregon pine washback and one of Islay's smallest spirit stills, which concentrates the flavours. It is aged primarily in first-fill ex-bourbon casks and is not chill-filtered, balancing the intense peaty notes with hints of vanilla and citrus.
