Type: Japanese Grain Whisky
Alcohol content: 45%
Distillery: Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. (Japan)
Produced by the historic Japanese distillery founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, descendant of an ancient family of sake brewers and the father of Japanese whisky, who studied the art of distilling directly in Scotland before returning home in 1920 with a wealth of knowledge and a Scottish wife. Coffey Grain owes its name to the type of still used, invented by Aeneas Coffey in 1830 and imported from Scotland in 1963, one of the very few in the world still in use today. The distillation process in Coffey stills, slower than modern column stills, allows for the preservation of more aromas and gives the whisky a particularly smooth and velvety texture. It is made primarily from corn, with a small percentage of malt—an unconventional choice for a Japanese whisky—and aged in a variety of casks, including ex-bourbon and ex-sherry, to create a flavor profile characterized by sweet notes of vanilla, caramel, sweet corn, and spice, with a distinctive touch of tropical fruit.
