Description:
Intense ruby red in color, verging on garnet, it presents a noble, broad, and elegant bouquet on the nose, with distinctive mineral notes reflecting its volcanic soils, complemented by aromas of roses, red fruits, and delicate spices. On the palate, it is dry, intense, vertical, and complex, with fine yet present tannins and a long finish with the mineral notes typical of porphyry. A minimum 36-month aging period (24 of which in oak) lends structure and refinement. It pairs excellently with Piedmontese braised meats, roasted red meats, furred game, porcini mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses such as Gorgonzola and Taleggio. Perfect with Alto Piemontese specialties such as agnolotti del plin and tajarin with truffles.
The "chiosso" in Alto Piemonte historically represents a vineyard enclosed by a stone wall: this boundary symbolizes the importance winemakers place on a particular cru due to its propensity to create unique wines. The Il Chiosso winery, led by Marco Arlunno and Carlo Cambieri, boasts the ability to source grapes from the most important historic crus in the Alto Piemonte hills. The soil is acidic, composed primarily of porphyry of ancient volcanic origin, which gives the Nebbiolo its distinctive mineral characteristics. Gattinara is produced with 100% Nebbiolo, vinified in stainless steel and aged in oak barrels according to the regulations, which mandate a minimum 36-month aging period.
