Description:
A deep garnet red in color, it offers complex aromas of ripe red fruit, including cherry and currant, floral notes of rose, clove, and wisteria, spicy notes, and balsamic hints of eucalyptus, rhubarb, and cinchona. On the palate, it is structured, rich, and enveloping, characterized by fine tannins and a long finish with mentholated notes. Thanks to its delicate tannins, the Barolo del Comune di Barolo has a more immediate approach than its single-zone counterparts. It is a Barolo of balance, born from the blending of different parcels. It pairs magnificently with Piedmontese braised meats, roast red meats, furred game, Alba white truffle, and aged cheeses from the Langhe. Perfect with local specialties such as agnolotti del plin, tajarin with truffles, mixed boiled meats, and finanziera.
From a small vineyard in Terlo and several parcels in Sarmassa, this traditional Barolo is produced, featuring long macerations (30-50 days depending on the vintage), delicate extractions, and maturation in 25-hectoliter barrels and 50-60 hectoliter tonneaux for a minimum of 24 months, followed by a long aging period in bottle for at least two years. Since the postwar period, the Scarzello family, led by Giuseppe Scarzello (then cellar master at a historic Barolo winery), has always vinified batches of grapes, selling them in demijohns or for consumption at the after-work club run by his grandmother in Barolo. The reins were then passed on to Giuseppe's son, Federico, in 1998. After attending oenology school in Alba, he decided to bottle what had been sold in bulk. Even today, with his wife and his tireless mother, he tends the vineyards and the entire production process. The winery boasts 5 hectares of vineyards, including 2.5 hectares of Nebbiolo for Barolo, 2 hectares in the Sarmassa vineyard, and half a hectare in the Terlo vineyard, with vines ranging in age from 5 to 30 years. Scarzello wines seek a territorial identity: with extensive work in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the cellar, it is precisely the terroir of this world-renowned winegrowing region that truly shines through. Average annual production does not exceed 7,000 bottles.
