Description:
Bright golden in color with amber highlights, the nose offers a fascinating and complex bouquet of apricot, dried figs, honey, and orange blossom, with notes of candied fruit and sweet spices. On the palate, it is sweet but not cloying, supported by a fresh acidity that balances the sweetness, with a long and persistent finish of dried fruit and candied citrus, considered by many to be one of the finest Italian dessert wines.
Marco De Bartoli, a revolutionary figure in the Sicilian winemaking scene, has also revitalized the tradition of Passito di Pantelleria. Bukkuram, which means "father of the vineyard" in Arabic, is made from Zibibbo grapes grown in the Pantelleria bush vine system (a UNESCO World Heritage site) in the island's district of the same name, in special hollows dug into the ground to protect them from wind and salt. The grapes are dried in the sun on racks for about 20-30 days, following an ancient tradition dating back to the Arab period.
