Description:
Amber in color with topaz highlights, the nose opens with intense notes of dried fruit, particularly toasted almonds, dried figs, and walnuts, then evolves into a fascinating blend of coffee, antique leather, oriental spices, and a salty touch reminiscent of the sea breeze. On the palate, it is dry, warm, and enveloping, with an extraordinary complexity that unfolds between toasted hazelnuts and candied orange peel, salted caramel, and exotic spices. The finish is endless, with a lingering finish that leaves echoes of dried fruit and a vibrant iodine note. Best enjoyed alone, excellent with aged and hard cheeses, it is also excellent with desserts featuring dried fruit, artisanal nougat, and almond paste, with dishes featuring tuna or mullet bottarga, and even with porcini mushrooms.
Marco De Bartoli was a pioneer and revolutionary in the Sicilian winemaking scene. With his eponymous winery, he restored lustre to the oldest and most authentic tradition of Marsala wine, countering the industrial drift that had debased its prestige and quality. His was a completely anachronistic wine, named after the district where it was born, with no denomination or vintage, and above all, without "fortification," as was done before the introduction of the Solera method by English traders in Sicily. Instead, every year for over twenty years, ad perpetuum , the vintage wine barrels were refilled with new wine, as the Marsala farmers traditionally did with their best wines. No longer a Marsala, not according to the production regulations, but a wine that embodies its purest and simplest tradition.
