Description:
It features an intense amber yellow color with golden highlights. It has a refined and complex nose that ranges from apricot to candied citrus peel, passing through honey, with hints of acacia, sage, and saffron. On the palate, it envelops with its softness and citrusy, slightly smoky acidity, with a sweet and very persistent finish that is never cloying. Ideal with all blue, aged, or sharp cheeses, as well as dry pastries.
Hungary's Tokaj region was known as a first-class wine-producing province well before its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002: legend has it that it was the Ottomans who discovered the noble rot that forms thanks to the rich volcanic and clay soil and the humid, sunny microclimate, which enriches this particular grape variety with absolutely unusual aromas and flavors.
The number of puttonyos indicates the amount of residual sugars present in the wine: the number 6 classifies it as a sweet wine, appreciated young for its rich fruity notes, but also (and especially) after about twenty years of aging. The botrytized (or "moldy") grapes, called "aszú," are harvested individually in successive passes through the vineyard, stored separately, and then added to the dry wine produced earlier in the same year to initiate a new fermentation.
